S-51 Reverse Transom DesignSea Fern was completed by Egon Nicolai of Vancouver, BC Mr. Nicolai still has her today and is moored in Vancouver.
Spencer Boats Ltd. provided the plans and later took the mould and started producing the Hull.
The hull, available in a reverse transom and traditional transom, went into formal production. All the reverse transom models were designated as 51' while the traditional transom was a 53'
During production, the transoms would inter-change as the Hull Numbers progressed between the two models.
The Spencer Yacht Owners Group Website has compiled the two models to one page as the hull number are consecutive.

Additional Information:
The boat was purchased by a retired Boeing aeronautical engineer in 1978 as a kit boat. It was built at the factory as a pilothouse, and is probably the only Spencer 53 pilothouse in existence. The owner had the interior professionally designed and built. He also took the effort to have teak decks fitted. As an engineer he was particularly concerned about system robustness and reliability. Every aspect of the boats design and build was a reflection of this principle. One example of this type of detail is seen with the bow rollers and ground tackle. The owner designed and had fabricated a dual roller stainless steel stem fitting (see photos) to hold a 75# CQR and a 65# CQR. The anchor windlass is wired with aircraft circuit breakers (courtesy of Boeing). The boat was fitted with roller furling jib, roller furling main and roller furling mizzen by Hood. It is probably one of the first boats so fitted in 1980. The owner and his wife sailed the boat by themselves well into their 80's. Both of them passed away within the last year and the family decided to sell the boat. We purchased the boat and undertook a major renovation by Seaview Boatyard East in Seattle to upgrade systems, rigging, Awlgrip the hull and cabin, and rebuild the galley and aft cabin for liveaboard use. We plan to use the boat locally (U.S./Canada) for the next 1-2 years before departing on a planned cruise south and west. (Photo Above of refit)
